AII-PS at the European Parliament for the Inauguration of the Exhibition on Frederick II - 28 January, Brussels
The Permanent Secretariat of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative (AII-PS) had the honor of attending the inauguration of the exhibition "The Legacy of Frederick II: A Timeless Model and a Father of Europe" at the European Parliament in Brussels.
Held at the Antall Building from January 27 to 31, the exhibition —strongly promoted by the Marche-based Member of the European Parliament Carlo Ciccioli— celebrates the remarkable heritage of Emperor Frederick II, highlighting his cultural, political, and legislative contributions to Europe.
Ambassador Pigliapoco, Head of the Permanent Secretariat, addressed the audience, extending his greetings and underlining the importance of fostering deeper European integration, particularly with the Western Balkans. During his speech, Ambassador Pigliapoco emphasized that the legacy of Frederick II reminds us of the power of dialogue, diplomacy, and cultural exchange—values that must guide our commitment to the European integration process, especially for the Western Balkans.
The exhibition marks two significant anniversaries: the 830th anniversary of Frederick II’s birth in Jesi (1194) and the 800th anniversary of the founding of the University of Naples Federico II (1224). Through a chronological and thematic journey, visitors explore the life and achievements of this visionary ruler, often referred to as Stupor Mundi—the wonder of the world. His court was a melting pot of cultures, where scholars, artists, and scientists from different backgrounds converged, fostering an unparalleled intellectual environment.
Moreover, the exhibition highlights how Frederick II served as a true bridge between different cultures and territories of the Mediterranean, uniting traditions and peoples in a fruitful and enriching dialogue—a theme that remains highly relevant today, particularly in strengthening ties between the regions bordering the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.
The presence of the AII-PS at this event reinforces its commitment to cultural diplomacy and regional cooperation. Frederick II’s legacy is a testament to the importance of integration, dialogue, and shared identity within Europe. Today, as we work towards an accelerated European path for the Western Balkans, we must draw inspiration from his vision of unity and coexistence. It also serves as a powerful reminder of how history can inform and inspire the future of European cooperation and integration.
